Western Michigan University Landscape Services resets schedules for the months of December, January, February and March as a strategy to provide APPA Level I service for Snow Removal. This year we are considering adding a third shift without adding more staff. In summary, we are modeling the schedule of the public safety officers, 5 days on and 2 days off, 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift, 24/7. The model thins the numbers per shift but provides "plows and shovels on the concrete" equitable throughout the week. During a major snowstorm, we would ramp up using call-in overtime or continuation of duty overtime.

Does any institution use this model and what are the pros and cons?

What is your schedule shift strategy to provide Level I snow removal with your institutions staff?
