Abstract: Sustainability and facilities professionals often are working towards similar goals; however, they may not always realize it! Each profession has its own set of vocabulary that does not always translate well outside of the profession. This discussion is designed to provide sustainability and facilities professionals with an understanding of four (4) basic concepts that each type of professional commonly works with (but may know it by another name). These concepts are Deferred Maintenance, Total Cost of Ownership, Scope, and Risk.  We will discuss how sustainability and facilities professionals can best understand these terms and hopefully use these synergies to catalyze more frequent and in-depth collaboration. Additionally, we will visit how facilities and sustainability staff can work together to collect, leverage, and communicate campus data. We'll specifically discuss an ongoing example of multi-campus collaboration involving sustainability and facilities staff and data sharing about organic waste in the Baltimore, Maryland (USA) region.
